Custom Website

We offer three service levels for this gig: Basic, Standard, and Premium. These are really organized around the complexity of the site and the functionality included, which I will explain in some detail below.

All website design projects are custom - we do not use templates. Every project is a unique design that we work together with you to make exactly how you want it. Check out our portfolio here.

We split our projects into two phases: design and build. During the design phase we’ll work from Adobe mockups to get everything looking right, and then during the build phase we’ll make it. We set up a dev site on a live server so you can see the progress and final result before it’s live.

I have a podcast and this is the first team that was able to provide what I needed to have a pretty and functional website. This was the best experience with a web designer/developer!! They were communicative, they were prompt, they were courteous, professional, and much more. I have two other businesses and will DEFINITELY use them again.

SERVICE OVERVIEW

This section is going to go into much greater detail about what is included at each level and what the optional add-ons are.

BASIC

Our standard base WordPress template is Astra Pro. This is normally $59 and is included with this gig. Our standard page builder is Beaver Builder which is normally $99 and is included with the gig.

We chose Astra because it is a light, fast, and efficient theme and is superior from an SEO standpoint. We used to primarily build with Divi and the Divi builder - and still can - but we found the theme to be too bloated and slow and it is no longer our default choice.

We can also use any page builder or theme you prefer. We have licenses for Elementor if you’d like to use that one instead. Any other premium theme or builder you would like to use you must provide at your own cost.

The base/default package includes 4 pages. We can also do less pages if you would like. Here is the base pricing for fewer pages:

  • 1 page site: $375
  • page site: $500
  • page site: $625

If you need more than 4 pages, each additional page is $125.

What is a page? A page is a single URL that includes content, like /contact, /about-us, /services, or /categories/socks. We treat products separately from pages, so those don’t count.

If you need content written, it is $50 per page with a limit of 1000 words. We generally recommend that you write your own content, as we are not experts on your business and will not be familiar with it in the same way you are.

If you would like more comprehensive SEO work done on the project - that is a $300 additional charge, which will include keyword research and on-page recommendations. You can find more information about the keyword research service here: https://bit.ly/PDF-KWR and the on-page recommendations service here: https://bit.ly/PDF-OPR Finally, if you would like to remove our footer credit (something like “Designed by Heaviside Group” with a link back to our website) there is a $200 cost. We’re including a cost reduction for that credit in our pricing, so if you don’t want it that’s no problem - but we have to remove the discount.

Now here are the details on plugins and functionality:

Plugins/functionality included:

1) Contact form configured with free Sendgrid account - note we do not troubleshoot email delivery issues
2) Email list/newsletter signup with client-provided service and credentials
3) Cloudflare CDN setup
4) Yoast SEO set up (on-page SEO or analysis not included without SEO add-on)
5) Wordfence web security setup
6) Client choice - subject to preapproval prior to project acceptance

Plugins/functionality not included:

1) Membership sites
2) Ecommerce
3) Custom development of any kind
4) Anything not mentioned above must be preapproved

Revisions - for the Basic service there are four rounds of revisions included. Make sure when you’re sending feedback you collect as much as possible in each submission so we can be efficient.

STANDARD

All of the basic details and add-ons are the same as the Basic package. Standard includes 10 pages but there is no lower page/reduced cost option available.

What Standard adds aside from more pages is Ecommerce functionality.

Our default Ecommerce platform is Woocommerce and that is what is included here. We don’t vdo Magneto sites, or Shopify, or anything else with this gig. The default number of products included is 50 - if you have more we may need to discuss custom pricing.

Only standard, non-custom Woocommerce implementation is included with up to 3 plugins that do NOT require any modification. If there are any costs for Woocommerce plugins/add-ons that are required for functionality those are your responsibility.

For the products: you are responsible for configuring the product upload csv including image URL links - we will provide the csv template and instructions for how to do it, and we’ll answer questions and help. But using that csv is what allows us to not charge you for every single product as a standalone page - so it is critical to the project!

7) Client choice - subject to preapproval prior to project acceptance
8) Client choice - subject to preapproval prior to project acceptance

Plugins/functionality included:

1) Membership sites
2) Custom development of any kind
3) Anything not mentioned above must be preapproved

PREMIUM

All of the basic details and add-ons are the same as the Basic and Standard packages. Premium includes 15 pages but there is no lower page/reduced cost option available.

What Premium adds aside from more pages is Advanced functionality.

7) Client choice - subject to preapproval prior to project acceptance
8) Client choice - subject to preapproval prior to project acceptance
9) Client choice - subject to preapproval prior to project acceptance
10) Client choice - subject to preapproval prior to project acceptance

Possible functionality at this level (subject to assessment and approval):

1) Membership sites
2) Course sites
3) User generated content sites
4) Custom development

In all cases, you must have live themes or examples of the functionality you have in mind for us to look at - we can’t spend time for free researching if your idea is possible.

Keep in mind that it is very possible that the quote will be significantly higher than $2495, and we may ask you what your budget is. This is not so that we can find ways we can overcharge you, but rather to qualify that your budget can support the project you have in mind. We're not going to spend time assessing and estimating a project only to learn your budget will not support it!

WHAT WE DO

Here’s a more detailed overview of our process and what we do. We have four teams here at Heaviside - three teams of technical experts and one operations team holding everything together. You’ll be working with our Web and SEO teams for this project - and if you need help advertising your business when the job is done we have a Digital Marketing team ready to assist as well.

Our operations team takes care of customer service and project management - and you’ll be corresponding with them. Our technical teams are not client-facing - they are too busy doing the production work. Our operations team takes your feedback to the technical folks, who make adjustments and/or respond as needed, and the project moves along steadily. Please keep in mind that this work can be complex and we’re juggling several projects - and so we allow for up to a one business day response timeframe for messages. Our teams don’t work on the weekends, so anything on Friday or during weekend hours likely won’t get a response until Monday.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

Keep in mind we have two phases to your project - design and build. The delivery estimation on the gig is a best possible scenario and it is normally indicative of the delivery timeframe for the design.

In general, we expect the design phase to take 7-14 days, and the build phase to take 1-4 weeks (or more) depending on how complex the site is. Basic sites are going to be 1-2 weeks for build, Standard sites are going to be 2-4 weeks for the build, and Premium sites are going to be 4 weeks or more for the build phase.

The biggest factor in how long it takes aside from the functionality is how many revision rounds take place, and how long they take. Keep in mind that we have many projects going on, and if it takes you a week to get back to us, it would not be reasonable to expect those revisions to happen by the next day. We plan our work ahead of time and it’s first-come first-served, so the faster you turn your revisions around the faster we will as well!

We do not limit the number of revisions on the Standard and Premium gigs (and in truth the Basic either) because we manage our projects to client satisfaction. We want you to be 100% satisfied with the design and the build, and do not want to have to tell you we can’t make the changes you want because you’ve run out of revisions. This process can take longer - but you’re going to remember how much you love the site long after you forget how many days longer it took than you may have thought it would.

STARTUP

Once we’ve understood your project and given you a quote, and you agree and want to continue, we’re going to send you a custom offer for half of the amount. So if it’s a $750 project the custom offer will be $375, and if it’s a $2000 project it will be $1000. This is going to be for the Design part of the gig. Once we complete that, and you approve the design, we’re going to deliver that gig and issue you another custom offer for the remaining 50% of the project. This is going to be for the Build part of the gig.

When you pay for the Design part of the gig, you’re going to get a link to an intake form that will ask you for a bunch of information that we need, including:

  • Your contact information
  • General information about your business and your website
  • Where your domain is registered and the credentials for it (for migration of the completed
  • Hosting information including credentials (for migration of the completed site)
  • Questions about your brand and design preferences, including websites you like
  • Anything else you want to let us know about the project

With that information, we’re going to get started on the design for you. We’re also going to generate a sitemap for you. If you have a current website, we’re going to get by crawling the site.

If there are any URL changes for the new site we will prepare a 301 redirection plan to preserve current link equity and other important SEO details.

If our website crawl reveals a material number of pages that were not included in the project scope, we may pause to ask you about them and what your plan is for them.

DESIGN

During the design phase, the primary activity is ... design. Our designer is going to take the information you provided in the intake form and create a proposed design based on that. He’ll start with the home page and add other critical pages as well once the initial concept is right.

You’ll be able to comment on the design and request changes and modifications as you go back and forth with the team getting things just right. As we mentioned earlier - we don’t limit the revision rounds here. We want it to be exactly what you want!

Once you agree it’s how you like it, we’ll close out this phase and move on to the build phase.

BUILD

For the build phase, the focus is on building and configuration. We’re going to set up your site
on our development server and give you access to it.

[Note for agencies: if this is a white label project for a client, you will need to provide a development instance that you control so that the white label environment can be maintained.]

You’re going to be able to see the progress as the build continues, and see how the site looks before it’s delivered. We’re going to build it so that it looks exactly like the design, and has exactly the functionality we agreed upon prior to starting the project.

You’ll know exactly what you’re going to get, because you’re going to see it before you take it over.

The included plugin configurations will also be done during this time - as well as the more advanced SEO work if you purchased it.

MIGRATION

At the end of the build phase, we’re going to take the completed site and migrate it to your hosting environment and make the appropriate DNS configurations to put it live.

Important: we do not set up, configure, or troubleshoot email or email delivery. That’s a job for an IT professional. We’ll set up your contact forms correctly and confirm the mail is sending, but if it doesn’t show up in your inbox that’s a client-side issue and you’ll need an IT person to assess that. This rarely happens, but we want to be very clear on the scope here.

WARRANTY

Post migration we’re going to complete the other gig and finalize the project. But we’re not leaving you without some security.

All of our web projects come with a 30 day warranty - if you find anything wrong with the site or misconfigured that was part of the scope we agreed to, we’re going to fix it no questions asked. This also rarely happens, but we want you to have the peace of mind that if you find something we’re going to take care of it for you.
